In this acclaimed classic novel of ESP in war--praised by reviewers and readers alike as both a riveting science fiction thriller and one of the finest chronicles of the Vietnam War--young Army Nurse Mary Damico dreams the deaths of soldiers before they happen, but cannot save them. Only when she is recruited for a secret unit of other "esp talents"--one run by a rogue CIA psychiatrist who may be a "talent" himself--can she become the warrior she needs to be to stop the psychiatrist's insanity and save those she has come to love. Dream Baby is based on fifteen years of research, interviews with two hundred veterans of three American wars who reported paranormal experiences that kept them alive, and actual classified contingency plans to end the war in Vietnam that have still not been made public.

Dream Baby eBook Bruce McAllister Reviews

Only a quarter into this book, it has keep my attention, that is saying a lot because I'm not a big book reader.
Dream Baby is a seminal work of excellent craft and creative genius. I have now seen the Vietnam War in an indelible way that grew inside my head so that I was there through all the blood and guts, but also through the vulnerable honesty of Mary, her dreaded dark visions of who will die and how, and her own dogged persistence along with her team to complete an almost impossible mission.
This book blew my mind. I've never read a war novel, nor a spec-fiction novel, like this. The prose are almost experimental at times, but it's still fast paced and unbelievably absorbing.
The underlying idea is fascinating using soldiers with psy powers to fight in Vietnam. However, the primary character is an uninteresting hysteric (even given the situations she is in it is way too much), naive, and frankly boring. The "lab rat" treatment of the psy soldiers, up to and including sending them to their deaths just to gather data or verify "talents" is also interesting(along with the straight-faced insertion of portions of articles in painful academic jargon) and turns the novel into a kind of horror movie. But neither of these interesting ideas are really developed, the novel is padded out with chapters of "interviews" which made their point after the first 10 or so but continue throughout. Worst of all, the end runs out of control, taking another interesting idea (the formation of a gestalt "talent" of four people) and dribbling it away with endless "but that happened in another universe" bits. If the book was taken in hand by a strong editor, it might become a solid novel. As it is, there are interesting ideas in search of an appealing story.
A strange melange of history, thriller, and science fiction work together to make one fine novel. Sometimes the intentionally confusing bits could be a little too confusing, but that's just a case of the author doing their job too well. A genuinely fine book.
I didn't think I'd enjoy such a graphic depiction of the Vietnam War. I am simply overwhelmed. Great, great book. I'm really glad I got the chance to read it now...I wasn't aware of this book in 1989 when it first appeared. It's absolutely amazing...read it!
McAllister not only treads that fine (and fascinating) line between dream and reality, but the reader is drawn into the story in such a subtle and clever manner, he doesn't realize he's caught in a nightmare until it's too late. This book is a gripping read from start to finish. Our hearts break for the heroes. I just hope I can live with myself for only giving it four stars.
